We architected a vibrant digital bookstore and live community platform that connects African authors directly with readers — processing secure book purchases, powering live author streams, and hosting interactive real-time chat.
African authors have long struggled to reach their readers digitally — no dedicated platform existed that combined secure book sales, live author engagement, and real-time community in one place. Existing solutions were either passive storefronts with no interaction layer, or generic streaming tools with no e-commerce capability. Studio Suavemente needed a platform that could hold all three at once: sell books, stream live sessions, and host community conversations without friction.
We architected Silkspace — a vibrant digital bookstore and live community platform built from the ground up for African literature. Authors upload their books, set their own pricing, and launch live video sessions directly to their readers. Readers browse samples, purchase securely using mobile money, card, or bank transfer, and access their full personal library — then drop into a live author stream with real-time chat, all within the same view. We called it the "Read & Watch" experience.

Designed a clean architecture separating the e-commerce layer (book catalogue, purchases, personal library) from the real-time layer (livestreams, chat, notifications). Used Next.js for the frontend and Django for the API, with Redis handling all real-time pub/sub and caching for high-traffic streams.
Integrated LiveKit for concurrent multi-room livestreaming. Built the session orchestration layer so authors can start, pause, and end streams with full control — while viewers join with sub-second latency even on mobile connections.
Engineered the signature dual-pane experience: users can read a book in one panel while watching the author's live stream in the other, with chat active throughout. Required delicate React state management and WebSocket synchronisation to keep all three surfaces in sync without lag.
Implemented Paystack for secure checkout supporting mobile money, card payments, and bank transfers — critical for accessibility across Africa. Built a library access system that unlocks purchased books instantly and gates stream attendance by purchase status.
Built a full admin dashboard for authors to upload titles, set pricing, manage their catalogue, view sales reports, and track stream analytics. Designed with a clean, intuitive UI so non-technical authors can manage everything without support.
Silkspace shipped in December 2025 with over 50 books uploaded from African authors, more than 150 hours of live author-reader sessions streamed, and a growing community of 200+ active readers — making it the first platform to bring African digital literature, live streaming, and community together in one seamless experience.
